Oxcarb Structure

Oxcarb Indications
- Adjunctive therapy for children aged 4-16 with partial epileptic seizures;
- Recommended for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia and diabetic neuropathy;
- Treatment as monotherapy and adjunctive in adults with partial seizures;
Oxcarb Dosage
For monotherapy treatment of partial seizures with or without secondary generalization:
Adults: Initiate at a dose of 600 mg/day as 300 mg twice daily. Increase as indicated by 300 mg/day every third day or 600 mg/day at weekly intervals up to 2400 mg/day in two divided doses. When converting to Oxcarb from other anticonvulsants, initiate at 300 mg twice daily while beginning to reduce the dose of other anticonvulsants. Oxcarb should be titrated upward by 600 mg/day at weekly intervals to achieve the recommended dose of 2400 mg/day. The dosage(s) of concurrent anticonvulsants should be completely withdrawn over 3 to 6 weeks as tolerated.
For adjunct treatment of partial seizures with or without secondary generalization:
Adults
Initiate with a dose of 600 mg/day, given as 300 mg twice daily. The dose may be increased by a maximum of 600 mg/day at weekly intervals up to 1200 mg/day.
Patients with renal impairment
CrCl <30 ml/mim: Initiate therapy with one-half of the usual starting dose and slowly titrate upward as necessary (300 mg/day).
Special population
Patients with hepatic impairment
Dose adjustment is not required in patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment.
Diabetic neuropathy
The recommended starting dose of Oxcarb is 150 mg up to a maximum dose of 1200 mg/day.
Trigeminal neuralgia
Low starting doses should be used, 200-400 mg daily, 100 mg twice daily in elderly people. Doses should be increased by 100 mg until pain control is achieved (maximum dose is 1600 mg).
Suggested guidelines for target dosage
For weight of 20-29 kg the target maintenance dose is 1200 mg/day. If weight is >39 kg, the target maintenance dose is 1800 mg/day.
Adolescents and children 4-16 years of age
Initiate at a daily dose of 8-10 mg/kg/day (generally not to exceed 600 mg/day) given in two divided doses. The target maintenance dose should be achieved over 2 weeks, and is dependent upon patient weight. Dosage must be individualized.
Oxcarb Contraindications
Oxcarb should not be used in patients with a known hypersensitivity to the drug or any of its components.
